同学会で、特筆すべきは世界中から著名な学者を迎えたことで、Rod Ellis氏、John Faneslow氏、Tim Murphey氏やJoseph Falout氏が基調講演者となりました。特別招待スピーカー (featured speaker) の面々は、聴衆にとっては評判の高い専門家たちであり、学会のテーマである「教育における革新的な取り組み」と呼応する、思考を刺激する発表で聴衆を惹きつけていました。本学の教員である渡慶次正則氏と小川寿美子氏が特別招待スピーカーの豪華メンバーに含まれています。
開会行事は、学会に施設無料提供などの惜しみないご厚意で賞を受領した本学の山里勝己学長の歓迎のあいさつで最高潮となりました。理事長の比嘉良雄氏は、学会が企画した美里児童養護施設への援助金造成 (ビール販売の収益を100％寄贈) に、個人的な資金カンパを行い、そのことで賞を受賞しました。

同Pan SIG学会はネット上のソーシャルメディアで、大きな話題となっており、学会に参加したすべての方々から高い称賛を受けました。学会の参加者は、すでに沖縄への再訪を口々に語っていました。
大会委員長である筆者と琉球大学のGeorge MacLean氏は大会の計画に1年を費やし、学会の準備のためにボランティアの方をまとめてきました。両氏の貢献は大きな称賛に値するものであると評価いただき、学会のスムースな運営に週末中をすごした学生たちの働きも目をみはるものがありました。

参加者の感想
JALTのPan SIG学会には、日本全国または海外から350人余の外国人教師や語学教材出版関係者が名桜大学のキャンパスにあふれました。普段、利用している講義棟の教室がすべて学会の発表の場となり、学生会館サクラウムのスカイホールはポスター発表やレセプションパーティの場として参加者から高い満足度を得ました。国際的な大学を目指す本学教職員の一人として、これほどにない感動を受けた国際学会となりました。また、本学ボランティア学生たちの生き生きとした、気おくれしない参加者への対応ぶりに成長を見る思いがしました。最後に諸施設を提供して頂いた名桜大学と、大会を大成功に導いたGeorge MacLean先生、Norman Fewell先生、宇座徳祐先生のご苦労に深く感謝いたします。

The 15th JALT PanSIG International Conference was held in Okinawa from May 20 th to the 23rd . Meio University hosted the event--the largest JALT PanSIG Conference in history and the largest language education conference ever held in Okinawa. The number of presentations was a formidable 350 with the audience bringing total attendance well over the 500 threshold. Presenters traveled from every continent around the world to attend with a dozen nations represented at the conference.
The conference featured several world-renowned scholars; including, Rod Ellis, John Faneslow, Tim Murphey, and Joseph Falout. The list of featured speakers provided the audience with an array of highly-touted specialists who captivated the audience with thought-provoking presentations coinciding with the conference's theme of "Innovations in Education." Meio University's Masanori Tokeshi and Sumiko Ogawa were among the showcase of featured speakers.
The opening ceremony was highlighted with a welcome speech from Meio University President
Katsunori Yamazato who received an award for his generous support of the conference. Chairman of the Board, the honorary Yoshio Higa, gave a generous personal donation to the conference charity, the Misato Jidoen Children's Home, and also received an award for his generosity.
The PanSIG Conference received generous support from the Okinawa Convention and Visitor's Bureau. In addition, over a dozen official endorsements were received from many leading business and educational institutions. Tokuyu Uza received the PanSIG Distinguished Service Award for his commitment to helping organize the conference and for obtaining a record in grants and endorsements.
The PanSIG Conference has become a buzzword in social media, receiving high praise from all of those who have attended. Many have described it as one of the most organized and most enjoyable conferences that they have ever attended. Most of the conference goers are already talking about returning to Okinawa.
The Conference Chairs, Norman Fewell of Meio University and George MacLean of the University of the Ryukyus, spent a full-year of planning and coordinating a large team of volunteers in preparation for the event. They have expressed much praise for the hard work and dedication of the student interns who spent a long weekend helping the conference run smoothly.
